Affordable Patio Decorating

It’s almost March, and there is already a change in the air. Spring can’t come soon enough! We love when the cherry blossoms bloom and weather warms, and thoughts turn to how we can spend more time outdoors! If you have a patio or deck, you may already be browsing the patio furniture at your local home improvement store, contemplating how you cam make your outdoor space beautiful. Even if you are on a budget, there are things you can do to create an outdoor space you will enjoy all season long.

Think Vertical!

If you have a small patio space, or if you need to create a bit of privacy for your patio, consider going vertical! You can use a trellis and some nice clematis or other vining annual plant to cover your trellis with colorful blooms, while blocking the view of close neighbors or pass traffic. You can also use vertical the vertical space of a fence panel or the side of your patio to grow small hanging pots of herbs (imagine the heavenly smell!), or flowering plants. You can find the supplies to create an easy hanging rack or other supports to attach your pots to. You can even repurpose pallets or other recycled material to hang your pots from. Small patios can really benefit from the vertical touch because floor space will be at a premium, but these ideas will work for any-sized patio.

Use Fabric

Outdoor fabric is a great way to add a pop of color and privacy to outdoor spaces. Outdoor drapery comes in a variety of color and styles, or you can make your own with outdoor-grade fabric, simple hems, and a simple frame to hang the fabric. It can bring a softness to the space and create a dramatic backdrop for your outdoor seating. Just make sure you are purchasing the right materials – fabric and curtains made for indoor use will not withstand the sun and weather. .

Just Add Sound

If you are dreaming of birdsong calling you from your private retreat, you can make that happen with the right plantings, bird feeders and bird baths. However, urban dwelling may not give you enough space to make this dream come true. If you have a small backyard or a 3rd-floor balcony, you can still add some soothing sounds with a small water fountain or wind chimes.

Let Your Personality Shine

Don’t be afraid to bring your favorite styles outdoors. Go bold with stripes, or soft and flowy with romantic a romantic touch. Bring an Asian flare or hear the tribal drumbeats with dramatic African prints. The sky is the limit. However, don’t go overboard. Use your flair to accent the outdoor beauty of your space, not compete with it!

Don’t Forget About Lighting

In order to enjoy your outdoor space after the sun goes down, you have to think about lighting. Solar lights help you avoid the need for an outdoor power source, and come in a variety of options, from tabletop lights to deck lights and walkway lights. You can also consider string lights to surround your space in a soft glow. String lights come in a variety of sizes, shapes, and colors, from the whimsical to the kitschy.

Ditch the Rectangular Table

If you have a small space, or if you want to create less-formal conversation spaces, then ditch the traditional angular table. It can make your space look inflexible and less inviting. Smaller, round tables, can be used to create friendly spaces for entertaining or just relaxing. If you don’t have room for dining and lounge space, then opt for the lounge space with an outdoor coffee table. That way, you can have the best of both worlds!
