Conquer Black Friday Like a Pro!

With just a little more than a week until Black Friday, we know that many of you have already been perusing the ads and making your lists. As one of the most anticipated shopping days of the year, apart from Cyber Monday, Black Friday has come to be a tradition for many Americans.

Many successful Black Friday shoppers will tell you that the key to scoring the best deals is to have a strategy in place. Clark Howard offers some great tips for planning your excursion to maximize your savings:

Save More with Discounted Gift Cards

This is a little known secret for saving even more on your Black Friday purchases. Discounted gift cards are available through online sellers such as Raise.com, but you can also purchase gift cards at Sam’s Club for as much as 25% off the face value.  As an example, you could purchase a $50 gift card for $40 or $45, and still be able to purchase $50 worth of goods at the retailer. If you use that gift card to pay for your Black Friday purchases, then you are compounding your savings. What a way to be a Budget Hero!

Your church or volunteer organization, or even your kids school or sports team may sell gift cards through a program called SCRIP. While this won’t necessarily save you money above and beyond your Black Friday savings, it is a way to give back to organizations that you support. The way it works is that you purchase a gift card through the SCRIP program at face value (either online or at a specified location) and the organization receives a percentage back. Some schools or sports organizations may even share that kick-back with you in the form of tuition or fee rebates.

Rank Your Wish List

Before leaving your home, prioritize the stores you want to go to, then rank the items by importance that you want to acquire at each store. Since there may be limited quantities of each item, you’ll want to make sure you snag the most important items first.

Take a Shopping Buddy

Having and extra set of hands can be invaluable when trying to snap up deals at opposite ends of a big box store.  If you have properly prioritized your list, then you can divide and conquer to grab the highest priority items without having to run from one area of the store to another before the quantities run out. You can cover more ground and have a greater chance of success.

If you are really savvy, you and your shopping buddy can coordinate your priority lists, so that you can cover all your priority items as you move from section to section.

Leave the Kiddos at Home

Obviously you can’t shop for Santa if the recipients are with you! But that aside, kids are distraction during this goal-oriented excursion. The crowds at the Black Friday events mean that you have to pay extra close attention prevent kids from wandering away, which means you can’t focus on moving quickly through the store for your list items. You may miss some good deals while chasing the kids around! So get a baby sitter or leave the kids with Grandma while you shop.

Be a Smarty Pants – Use Your Smart Phone!

Smart phones can do so much more than uploading cute Instagram photos and checking in on social media. You can use a variety of apps to check prices on your items to ensure you are getting the best price both online and in physical stores. This is especially helpful since you might be tempted to put things in your cart that are not part of the Black Friday sales. If you can find it cheaper somewhere else, than you can stretch your holiday dollars even further.
