Extra Room? Create Space with Purpose

There are various reasons and times in our lives when we can end up with an extra room at home. Whether the kids have moved out, or you’ve finished the basement and have a new extra space, whatever the reason, don’t let it become an oversized storage closet. Instead turn it into a space with a purpose.

If you’re not sure what to do with your extra space, check out the following ideas for some inspiration.

With more people working from home, a home office is a popular choice for an extra room. Having a private area where you can tune out the rest of the household while you get through your workday can have a big impact on how efficient and smoothly your workday flows. If you opt for a home office be sure to include enough shelving and desk space to accommodate your work space needs. Good lighting is also key. Part of your office can also be a quiet oasis, the ideal spot for a reading nook, set up a comfy couch or chair with an end table for drinks and snacks, and a bookcase or shelf for magazines. When you need a break, you’ve got the space.

Speaking of an oasis space, serenity could be just the thing for your extra room. The health benefits of regular meditation as well as mindful movement practices like yoga and Thai-Chi abound. Whether you’re a regular practitioner or are ready to begin, dedicating a space at home for quiet reflection and intentional movement exercise, makes incorporating this practice into your lifestyle easy to do. With such a room opt for soft, natural colors, like sage green, light gray or amber yellow.

A wood or tile floor is optimal for a meditation room as well; though a tightly woven, dense carpet will work also. Be sure to add in plenty of pillows for comfort and give yourself space to keep equipment stored when not in use. This could also be another ideal place for that great-escape reading nook. Creating a combo home gym with space for yoga is another option, a great choice for those who want a variety of exercise options.

If you love to spend time with friends and family and have a passion for playing games, create a game/play room, where there’s fun for all ages. Set up the space with comfy couches and chairs, add in storage-cube ottomans for extra seating and a place to store board games and cards. Make a statement with a chessboard coffee table; ready for a match any time. A good game table is a must, whether for a hand of Texas Hold ‘Em, a round Trivial Pursuit, Scrabble or “Go Fish” with the young ones. Include a flat screen TV and video game console; the kids can play something they enjoy while the parents play backgammon with friends. Set up a puzzle table in a corner and keep a fun, challenging puzzle out, a great way to spend quality time with your family.
