With a bit of creativity and planning a small backyard can become an oasis of relaxation and ideal place to entertain. Listed below are some design ideas which work in small gardens.

Think vertically. While you may have a small area in ground square footage, you can extend your space by going vertical. Establishing a vertical garden is a design trend which as been catching on recently. Take advantage of a wall or fence where planters can be readily attached or use a simple frame such as lattice to grow climbing vines. A vertical garden keeps plants contained and easy to maintain. Culinary herbs can also do well in this type of setting, adding beauty and fragrance to your yard.

For anyone who loves to garden, growing vegetable or beautiful flowers, a raised garden bed is a great way to section off part of your yard for plants, while adding an architectural element to your landscaping. Terracing your yard is another good way to expand your useable space in a vertical way. Capping your raised beds or terrace walls with paver stones or brick will also add additional seating areas for entertaining.

Hardscaping features can enhance the design flow of your yard, leading guests to different focal areas without overwhelming. Use your patio for grilling and dining outside and set up a quiet reading or meditation nook towards the back of your space, connected with a path of pavers or river rock. Install a small pergola to feature this other area. Low-built stone walls are a great way to further separate the spaces without overcrowding.

Limit the area devoted to lawn grass and help make your yard feel larger by using a variety of material to establish different focal points. Lighting is another way you can make your small space feel larger. With today’s LED and solar light products, the sky’s the limit in how creative you can get with lighting.
