How Do You Feel About the Proposed Arlington Community Boathouse?

Change is the one constant in the universe. When it comes to changes which impact a community at large, it’s best when residents have the chance to chime in with how they feel about the proposed change. This is exactly what’s happening around the proposed Arlington Community Boathouse.

As reported by Curbed DC, you may already be aware of this major project. Working with the National Park Service (NPS), the Arlington Boathouse Foundation (ABF) is aiming to provide a community boathouse, launch space for a variety of non-motorized water craft accessible to everyone. The plan at this stage is to locate it somewhere near Roosevelt Island and south of Key Bridge not far from Rosslyn.

The National Park Service is currently seeking comments from the public; now’s your chance to tell the NPS how you feel about this proposed community resource, and what you would like to see should it come to fruition. You can post your comments via the NPS website through July 30th.

The Arlington Boathouse Foundation has been working to provide this new community resource for several reasons. The main goals are to provide better public access to the Potomac River via Arlington County, as well as to provide a home for Arlington’s public-school rowing teams and other non-motorized boats. There’s also an education aspect to the project with the aim to provide environmental education experiences around the Potomac.

The proposed site of the community boathouse will be accessible by mass transit including Metro, and open to the public at large. When new buildings go up along the river many worry about loosing their views. With this project there will not be a disruptive change in the Potomac skyline as the construction is set to be “tucked” into the hillside behind the GW Parkway stone safety wall. The building will also be designed and built according to LEED Standards, making this a green building of the highest quality.
