Kitchen Trends vs Classic Styling

Trends in kitchen design are constantly changing. Popular styles of cabinetry and countertop  materials, flooring, backsplashes, even appliances, fixtures, and lighting all shift regularly.  The problem with following trends is that in a few months or next year, the trends will change again. Home owners that are constantly chasing trends end up spending a lot of money making updates.

Of course, some trends are less expensive than others. Paint is relatively cheap. So if you want to constantly refresh your paint to keep up with the new and trendy, then great! Go for it! When you go to sell your home, you may be advised to revert back to a more neutral palette, but the expense to do so will not be a huge hit to the pocketbook.

However, if you are planning to make major updates to your kitchen, and if you think you might be selling your home within the next five years or less, then you may want to look through a potential buyers’ lens when making choices. What’s trendy may not appeal to all tastes, and buyers may shy away from homes where they will have to spend a fortune undoing “trendy” kitchen styles.

The good news is, you can keep an eye out for the trends and incorporate some of the “new and now” into your style through decor, artwork, and paint. However, when it comes to expensive updates like cabinets and countertops, make strategic choices that are variations of “classic” styles that are always in fashion.

According to expert designers, the following design trends provide just the right classic foundation to blend with your style and decor ideas, while also easily appealing to potential future buyers.

Smart Lighting

Smart lighting isn’t necessarily a “style”, since nearly any style of lighting can be incorporated into smart home functionality. However, Smart features play well with buyers and are quickly becoming a feature of many homes on the market.

Specific to the kitchen, energy efficient LED lighting can offer color options, as well as variable brightness, which can all be controlled from an app on a tablet or through one of the various voice-command assistants (such as Alexa, Google Home, iHome, etc.). Use for under cabinet lighting to provide extra task lighting, or change colors and dim for safety in the dark. You can also add overhead lights and directional lights to the Smart home applications for complete control over the mood in your kitchen!

Solid Wood Cabinets

You can’t go wrong with solid wood cabinets. While there are a variety of trendy materials out there that promise a European flair, wood cabinets still say “quality”. Wood-grained, stained cabinets are still preferred over painted options, and they provide a classic, clean look that can be the backdrop for your personal flair, while protecting your resale value.

In terms of door styles, the current popular style is the flat front (or “slab”) cabinet doors, which provide a sleek, sophisticated look to your cabinets. However, Shaker cabinets styles have withstood the test of time, and continue to hold value, as well.

Kitchen Islands

If you have room for an island, then this iconic kitchen features is a safe bet for catering to potential future buyers. In addition to providing additional storage, counter, and casual dining space, the island is important for creating the oft cited “work triangle” that makes kitchens so much more functional and efficient. Experts agree that this kitchen islands are here to stay, and are a good investment in a kitchen remodel.

Stylish Countertops

When it comes to countertops, the choices are nearly limitless, from the economy choices of laminate, to the natural choices of quartz and granite and wood, to stainless steel and eco-friendly recycled glass and cement. Granite and quartz are the current trendy choices that hold their value upon resale, are durable, and look awesome. Our advice is to choose color and pattern options that would coordinate well with a variety tastes, so that potential buyers don’t feel held captive by specific color choices for walls and backsplashes in order to coordinate with unique countertop styles.

When planning a kitchen update, it definitely helps to investigate the trends and be aware of what buyers are looking for.
