Make a Statement with a Fireplace in Your WDC Home

A home is made more comfortable and appealing with a fireplace. Once the center of any home, the hearth is where people like to gather, especially on a cold, winter’s night. If you have a fireplace or are thinking of adding one, this is an excellent way to make an architectural statement right at home.

The first design element to consider is what type of fireplace will you have? There’s nothing like the crackle of a wood burning stove or hearth, but not everyone wants to deal with the impacts of using wood. From the cost of buying seasoned wood, to the keeping and care of it, and the environmental concerns, wood isn’t for everyone.

Natural gas is another alternative which is cost effective, cleaner burning for the environment and is easy to maintain. There are also some newer design options which work better with gas and add another layer of design style to a fireplace. Ceramic fireballs and glass enclosed fireplaces each add a sense of drama to a fireplace for example.

Electric fireplaces are also gaining in popularity as another fuel alternative, as are gel-fueled fireplaces. Both of these allow for more creative installation options such as free-standing units or wall-mounted pieces. Where you can choose just about any space you want in your home for a fireplace.

Whether you go for gas or traditional wood, you need not stick with the average brick lined fireplace. If you have two rooms with a shared wall, a two-way fireplace is an option worth considering. Another design option with dramatic flare is and open-column fireplace, where the hearth is placed within a protruding wall or wide column, exposing three sides for fire-viewing.

A fireplace is also an excellent way to highlight your own personal design style at home. If you enjoy a more modern look, sleek designs in concrete, glass or metal may be your forte. If homey and rustic suit your tastes, the choices are almost endless when it comes to using natural stone, brick and wood. Achieve elegance with marble or metallic finials in brushed gold, silver or copper.

Another design element to consider is how you use the space around your fireplace. If you opt for wood-burning, think about where you can store wood and incorporate into your design plans. Built-in shelving or an open storage space underneath the fireplace keep wood readily at hand. Shelving also allows for other items to feature such as books and art.

Many a TV has taken over the space where fireplaces are, why not have them work together? A low-set fireplace allows for a flat screen TV to be installed above. Want the TV handy but don’t always want to see it? Sliding panels or doors are an excellent way to close off the TV when not in use.

Updating or adding a fireplace where once there was none will add to the appeal of your home. Find more ideas and inspiration with this Elle Décor photo gallery.
